Background
Graymount House Action Group has been set up in response to a recent planning application to demolish Graymount House on Dungriffin Road and replace it with a 4 storey block of 32 apartments.
This development is clearly out of character with the area and we are organising a group of concerned residents to oppose the application. We are not against the principle of development but the current proposal is out of scale and not in keeping with the surrounding area.
There are already plans in place to develop 1,034 apartments across Howth peninsula – more than double the current county development target. What Howth needs is more family homes, not large blocks of apartments run by pension funds and locking out locals from home ownership.

History
The first buildings on the Graymount site – then called Birdeen – were in John Rocques Map of Dublin (1760). By 1843 this had developed into a hamlet called Bogeen which fronted onto the lane which eventually became Dungriffin Road.
Greymount was built in the 1870’s alongside most of the large houses around Dungriffin Road – Brook Lawn, Inishfalen, Dun Griffan, Hillside, and Glenview. The house was extended in the 1930’s and has always been occupied as a family residence. In keeping with other properties in the area it retains many of its original features and heritage.
The trees facing onto Dungriffin Road are believed to be over 150 years old and a colony of bats are nesting in the area that need to be protected also.
